Whether the British weather makes you happy or you’re more a fan of foreign climes, chances are you may be currently looking forward to a well-deserved summer break. Figures released by ABTA for last year show the amount of holidays we take is on the rise.

In fact, we now take around four a year on average either at home or abroad. All in all, that is plenty of opportunity to enjoy rest, relaxation and rather a lot of sun exposure. As I mentioned in my previous article, spending time in the sun can do us a lot of good, improving both our physical and mental health.

However, if we’re not careful our favourite heat source can cause us trouble as well.

Following on from my last look at the effect the sun has on our skin, it is important to also consider the problem of photo-ageing, a subtle process with far more obvious results.

One of the ways the sun’s UV rays cause photo-ageing is by damaging the skin’s collagen and elastin, leaving it less firm and elastic and resulting in the premature appearance of deep wrinkles and fine lines. As the damage happens over a period of time, we are often unaware of it until it is too late. In fact, it is estimated that 80% of the signs of skin ageing we experience as adults are the result of sun exposure we received as a child. If you remember running away from sun cream rather than checking its UV protection level you are among the many.

Sun exposure also causes our skin to appear older by leaving it looking uneven. Irregular pigmentation means some areas of the skin appear darker and blotchy, losing any chance of you having a youthful glow.

All this skin damage can leave us looking older than we are, or certainly older than we feel. It is not the image that will get us excited for a summer of new experiences. The good news is that your skin story need not end here. I offer some fantastic treatments that will give your appearance and your confidence a lift.

Firstly, I recommend the new retinoic acid, non-invasive facial peel from Mask Professional. Retinoids encourage collagen production, helping your skin to regain elasticity and strength. The retinoic acid also has a whitening and antioxidant effect. Suitable for use on the neck, cleavage and hands, the peel will help your skin to look healthier, firmer and lifted with a more even tone. The treatment is quick, simple and requires no downtime so it is a great option to leave you looking and feeling more youthful, ready for some summer fun.

If you prefer a cream to a peel, I offer the latest range of Juvilis absorbable fillers. Their lifting and protecting day lotion firms the skin and smooths wrinkles. It also contains the powerful antioxidant vitamin C, which is brilliant at protecting collagen from damaging free radicals and is best for reducing uneven brown pigmentation.
